Mornings in Arashiyama
The light here arrives in layers. First the bamboo, then the river, then a single bell from a hidden temple. We had come for the famous grove, but stayed for the mornings: a thermos of hojicha, a heron the colour of pewter, a path that began nowhere and ended in tea.
"Travel slowly enough that the city forgets you are a stranger." — overheard in a Kyoto tea house.
